What is interventional pulmonology?
Interventional pulmonology is a subspecialty of pulmonology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases using minimally invasive techniques. These techniques include bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS),and interventional bronchoscopy.
Bronchoscopy is a procedure that involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end into the lungs. This allows the doctor to visualize the inside of the lungs and take biopsies of suspicious lesions. EBUS is a type of bronchoscopy that uses ultrasound to create images of the lungs and surrounding structures. This can help to identify lesions that are not visible on regular bronchoscopy.
Interventional bronchoscopy is a type of bronchoscopy that uses specialized instruments to treat respiratory diseases. These instruments can be used to remove blockages from the airways, place stents in the airways, and deliver therapies to the lungs.
Advances in interventional pulmonology
There have been significant advances in interventional pulmonology in recent years. These advances include:
- New techniques for diagnosing lung cancer. In the past, lung cancer was often diagnosed at a late stage, when it was more difficult to treat. However, new techniques such as EBUS and narrow-band imaging (NBI) are now available to help diagnose lung cancer at an earlier stage, when it is more likely to be curable.
- New treatments for lung cancer. In the past, the only treatment for lung cancer was surgery. However, new treatments such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy are now available to treat lung cancer. These treatments can help to shrink tumors, relieve symptoms, and prolong life.
- New techniques for treating emphysema. Emphysema is a chronic lung disease that causes shortness of breath and other respiratory problems. In the past, there was no cure for emphysema. However, new techniques such as bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) and endobronchial valve placement are now available to treat emphysema. These treatments can help to improve lung function and relieve symptoms.
- New treatments for other respiratory diseases. Interventional pulmonology techniques can also be used to treat other respiratory diseases, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary fibrosis. These treatments can help to relieve symptoms, improve lung function, and prevent complications.
Interventional pulmonology is a rapidly evolving field that offers new and innovative treatments for respiratory diseases. In recent years, there have been significant advances in interventional pulmonology, including new techniques for diagnosing and treating lung cancer, emphysema, and other respiratory conditions. These advances are providing new hope for patients with respiratory diseases.
