Its reputation as one of the finest university bands in America is a testament to the dedication and artistry of its many talented musicians. However, few know the name of the man who played a pivotal role in shaping the band's legacy: William Bush.

After graduating from high school, Bush attended the University of Arkansas, where he studied music education. He later served in the United States Army during World War II, where he gained valuable experience leading military bands.
In 1953, Bush joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee as an assistant director of bands. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the director of the marching band in 1962. It was during his tenure that the band began its transformation into the world-renowned ensemble it is today.
Bush was a visionary leader with an unwavering commitment to musical excellence. He set high standards for his musicians and expected them to perform at their best. He also worked tirelessly to promote the band's image and to expand its repertoire. Under his direction, the band performed at prestigious events such as the Orange Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
One of Bush's most significant contributions to the band was the creation of the "Pride of the Southland" fight song. The song, which is still played at every Tennessee football game, has become synonymous with the band and the university. Bush also introduced the tradition of playing "The Vol Navy" on the field after every Tennessee victory, a tradition that has continued to this day.
Bush's influence on the UT Marching Band extended beyond his tenure as director. He established a culture of excellence that continues to inspire generations of musicians. He also mentored many young musicians who went on to become successful band directors and educators.
William Bush retired from the University of Tennessee in 1988, but his legacy continues to live on. The band he helped to create remains one of the most respected and admired university bands in the nation. In 1993, Bush was inducted into the National Band Association Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his extraordinary contributions to the world of music.
William Bush passed away in 2006 at the age of 80. He will be remembered as a visionary leader, a gifted musician, and a devoted educator. His legacy will continue to inspire and motivate generations of musicians for years to come.

He wrote several pieces for band, including "The Pride of the Southland" fight song and "The Vol Navy." He also arranged many other popular songs for band, including "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America."
Bush was a passionate advocate for music education. He believed that music had the power to transform lives and that every child should have the opportunity to learn music. He was instrumental in the development of several music education programs in Tennessee and across the nation.
William Bush was a true pioneer in the field of music education. His dedication to excellence and his passion for teaching inspired generations of musicians. He will be remembered as one of the most influential band directors in American history.
